What is DTF and it's Benefits?

DTF Rolls ready to cut and press onto garments

DTF Rolls ready to cut and press onto garments

At its simplest, DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a digital printing process where a design is printed onto a special clear film, which is then transferred onto fabric using heat and pressure.

Think of it like a high-tech, professional version of those iron-on transfers from the 90s—but instead of peeling off after one wash, these are engineered to last as long as the garment itself.

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing has completely disrupted the custom apparel industry, particularly for workwear where durability and cost-efficiency are non-negotiable. If you’re looking to brand a team without draining the budget, here is why DTF is likely your best bet.

1. Drastic Cost Savings on Small-to-Medium Runs

Traditional screen printing requires expensive screens for every colour in a design. If you only need 10 shirts with a 4 colour logo, the setup fees alone make it unaffordable.

  • No Setup Fees: Since DTF is digital, there are no screens to burn or plates to make.
  • Gang Sheets: You can print multiple different logos on a single gang sheet (a long roll of film), maximising every inch of material and reducing waste.

2. Unmatched Versatility of Fabrics

Unlike Sublimation (which only works on polyester) or DTG (which prefers 100% cotton), DTF is the universal solution.

  • Workwear Staples: It adheres perfectly to heavy canvas jackets, high-vis polyester vests, nylon windbreakers, and cotton hoodies.
  • No Pre-treatment: You don't need to spray fabrics with chemicals before printing, saving both time and labour costs.

3. High Durability for Hard Labour

Workwear gets abused. It’s thrown in industrial washers, exposed to heat, and stretched during physical tasks.

  • Stretch & Recovery: DTF inks are incredibly flexible. The print won't crack when the fabric stretches.
  • Wash Fastness: High-quality DTF transfers can easily withstand 50 washes without significant fading or peeling, ensuring the cost per wear remains low.

4. Superior Detail and Colour

If your branding involves gradients, fine lines, or small text (like Safety Supervisor or phone numbers), DTF handles it better than embroidery or vinyl.

  • Photographic Quality: You can achieve full-colour vibrancy and intricate detail that would be impossible with traditional cut and weed vinyl.
  • Small Text Clarity: It maintains legibility on small chest pockets or neck labels.
